Course Description: This course is a bridge course for the brand-new clinician – the mental health or other healing professional fresh out of school, entering internship, or standing on the edge of early independent practice. It covers what it actually means to run a practice: entity setup and insurance, the business plan, marketing and professional relationships, financial planning, payment systems, crisis and contingency planning, termination, business ethics, licensing logistics, leadership, growth models, hiring recognition, succession planning, professional isolation and self-care, and technology and telehealth setup. It deliberately hands off insurance claims submission, credentialing, and appeals to BM-202, and it is built around applied exercises you can complete as you go – ending with a working business plan you can actually use.
Key concepts covered include:
- Private practice reality / behind the scenes
- Entity setup (sole proprietor, LLC, S-corp) and the insurance stack
- Business planning and development
- Financial planning for the self-employed
- Getting paid: fees, sliding scales, no-show and cancellation policies
- Marketing and professional relationships
- Business ethics and risk response
- Crisis management and contingency planning
- Growth paths and practice models
- Succession and exit planning
- Technology and telehealth setup
- Teacher: Kenneth Nelan
